Digital Marketing Strategy 101

So much talk and promises about Digital Marketing and what it can do for your business, where do you start? Every marketing consultant has a sure fire way of implementing a Digital Marketing strategy that will be just right for your business.  All nonsense, why? Because no-one knows your business better than you and no-one knows what your customers are looking for better than you.

You could spend a lot of time looking for the best way to market your business online but here are a few tips we have learned over the years.

Target, Target, Target.

We are in the business of SMS Marketing which is one of the best targeted marketing channels for business. We are all about targeted marketing because it saves time and money for our customers.  We’re not fans of broadcast or ‘spray and pray’ marketing. We prefer to research as much as we can and then target the channels and areas which are most likely to give us a return.

Before we start, I am assuming your business has a professional website with a clear message.

Know your customers online habits

What time of the day are they likely to be online?   If your customers are more likely be online in the evenings then you can create Google Adwords campaigns to be seen during evening hours.

What social media channels do they use?  Do different customers use FaceBook, Google+, LinkedIn or Twitter. Depending on which, the message will be completely different.

Do you have a database of email addresses or mobile numbers?  Have the customers given you permission to contact them with offers or promotions?  This opens up a direct channel to your customers with email and SMS campaigns.


Start small and if something is working, increase your budget slightly.  There will come a point where the law of diminishing returns kicks in but until you reach that point, you can increase the budget as the returns increase.

Keep a spreadsheet of the marketing channels that best suit your business and know the reasons why. This will help you critically analyses any new marketing channels and whether they would suit your business.

Rinse and Repeat

This is the hardest bit. or the most fun if you like watching revenues grow. Constantly monitor your customers changing habits and keep informed of how they may be changing. Use flash polls and surveys to detect any change in mood of your customer’s behaviours.
